My name is Hans Gerd Broeder, year of completion 1952. In the 1970's, while being in Trincomalee, Sri lanka, I was infected with the "underwater world"- virus for the first time: I fell almost instantly for the room-sized, multi-storied Coral clusters, which unfortunately were destroyed in the last civil war and by a tsunami. From that time on, the "virus" slumbered deep within me - until, a few years ago, I visited the Island Bunaken which lies off the shore of northern Sulawesi, Indonesia.
As the diehard snorkeler I had been 2 years ago, I made the following experience at the islands local reef: A gigantic swarm of countless tuna, at least 50 meters long and ten meters in height, passed me by like a big, rotating roll . The silvery-blue reflections caused by light of the perfectly shining 3 pm sun took my breath away. Noone among the hotel guests believed me, only the natives did. It was this experience that marked the birth of my passion for underwater photography.
Since 2009 I've been trying out different underwater compact cameras (
for example, Olympus tough, Sony TX5 and TX7 with underwater casing),
but I was never really satisfied with the results until I started using
the G12 from Canon. Almost all pictures and movies offered were shot
with that inexpensive compact camera.
However, starting September 2011, I will try out a professional SLR
camera ( the Nikon D 300S) for the first time, hopefully giving me the
chance for further development.
As an retiree living in Thailand, I visit Bunaken four times every year; each visit is approximately 3 weeks long and consists of at least 3-4 hours each day dedicated to pursue my passion. Every time I go snorkeling, I experience a surreal parallel world which I deeply respect and love. For a limited amount of time, I have the honour of being tolerated as a guest in this fantastic world. Knowing that, I always act in an accordingly respectful way -- an attitude that was rewarded by mother nature with the appearance of not only one but two of the rare Dugongs at an interval of only 15 months, a threatened kind of sea cow , approx. 4 m long. :) Check out the corresponding video.
The fishes and all the other creatures of the blue seem to get used to the "black man"( it's the colour I always wear); sometimes you get the feeling that they present themselves as if they were models on a catwalk.
Although being an almost 60 year old fossil myself, I'm planning
to to participate in an OWD-training. Mh, I'm wondering were
all this will lead me -- Rebreather courses, maybe ? Who knows; as they
say, the sky is the limit, and I think I'm capable for almost everything..

Mein Name ist Hans Gerd Broeder, Baujahr 1952. In den 70-er Jahren wurde ich in Trincomalee auf Sri Lanka erstmals mit dem "Virus" Unterwasserwelt angesteckt. Zimmergrosse, mehrstoeckige Korallenanordnungen hatten es mir angetan. Sie wurden später leider größtenteils durch den letzten Bürgerkrieg und Tsunami zerstoert. Dieser "Virus" schlummerte in mir, bis ich vor wenigen Jahren die Insel Bunaken von Nordsulawesi, Indonesien bereiste.
Als bisher eingefleischter (nur) Schnorchler hatte ich vor ca. 2 Jahren an der dortigen Riffsteilwand folgendes Erlebnis:
Ein gigantischer 50m langer und 10 m hoher Schwarm von unzähligen Thunfischen zog wie eine große, rotierende Walze von recht nach links an mir vorbei. Die silber-blauen Reflektionen ausgelöst durch den Schein der perfekt stehenden 15.00 Uhr-Sonne hatten mir den Atem geraubt.
Außer den Einheimischen hatte mir keiner der Hotelgäste geglaubt.
Das war DIE Geburtsstunde meiner Unterwasserfotografie.
Seit 2009 benutzte ich verschiedene Unterwasserkompaktkameras ( Olympus tough, Sony TX 5 und TX7 mit Unterwassergehäuse). Erst mit der G12 von Canon war ich zufrieden. Alle angebotenen Fotos und Filme wurden fast ausschliesslich mit dieser preiswerten Kompakten geschossen bzw. gedreht. Ab Sept. 2011 werde ich mit der Nikon D 300S erstmals an einer professionellen Spiegelreflexkamera schnuppern und mich hoffentlich weiterentwickeln.
Ich komme als in Thailand lebender Privatier viermal im Jahr nach Bunaken, bleibe dort je 3 Wochen, um täglich insgesamt 3-4 Stunden im warmen Nass meiner "Sucht" zu frönen.
Bei jedem Schnorchelgang erlebe ich immer wieder aufs Neue eine surreale Parallelwelt die ich respektiere und liebe. Zeitlich begrenzt habe ich die Ehre, als GAST geduldet zu werden. Dementsprechend benehme ich mich angemessen.
Offensichtlich aus Dankbarkeit für meine bisherige Ruecksichtnahme wurde ich von 'Mutter Natur' mit dem Auftauchen zweier vom Aussterben bedrohter Seekühe (Dugon, rundd 4m lang - siehe Video) im Abstand von 15 Monaten belohnt (Scherz).
Die Fischlis und sonstiges Getier haben sich mittlerweile an den 'Schwarzen Mann' ( ich bin halt in dieser Farbe angezogen) gewöhnt, präsentieren sich manchmal wie auf dem Laufsteg.
Ich werde nun doch wohl als fast 60-jähriges altes Fossil noch einen OWD-Tauchkurs anfangen. Mal sehen wo das alles so hinführt?! (Rebreather-Kurs?).
Mir ist 'alles' zuzutrauen.
